A hanging scale rearways (back lever) is a static hold performed on the rings. The skill is performed by lowering from an inverted hang or inverted piked hang, until the gymnast's body reaches horizontal, facing towards the floor. Performing a back lever requires a certain degree of strength in the chest and shoulders, back and glutei. Minimum requirement according to the code of points is 2 sec. of hold. The body should be fully extended and straight, arms should tight too, with the wrists facing the floor. The head is in the middle position.
From a straight body inverted hang (candle stick), the gymnast slowly lowers their straight body down to the dorsal (German) hang. In order to complete the drill, the body should move very slowly, squeezing the shoulders and back muscles.
From a German hang, the gymnast raises their body in a piked position up to an inverted piked hang. The arms are pushing down the rings, and all the body muscles are squeezed, especially the back muscles.
From an inverted hang, the gymnast lowers their body in a straddle, down to the horizontal and holds. The legs are open, but there is no hip angle, the body is extended. Having the legs open wider makes it easier to hold in horizontal.
The coach or teammate spots for the back lever hold. The drill may be executed alone, or as part of a strength routine. Completing multiple sets of 5+ second holds works well.
